I don't always follow my own advice as I am anxious to start my quilt, or garment right now, but it is best to pre-wash your cotton fabric. When you wash bright or dark colored clothing for the first time, you probably wash it by itself. Most of us have washed a bright colored garment with white clothing and ended up with the white garment being discolored. Pre-washing allows the excess color pigments to be released (almost all of our fabrics are "color fast", so no problem with color pigments being released in washing, but pre-washing allows your fabric to take it's natural shape prior to making your quilt, garment or decor item made of cotton fabrics.
