Decorative Luggage Tag

  • Hook, Loop, Lock (HLL) Book by Theresa Pulido
  • 3.3 Latch Hook Canvas 5-1/2"x 9” (17 squares x 14 squares)
  • Quick Lock Hook tool
  • Tapestry needle
  • Batik fabric-1/8 yd. of each color. (1/4 yd. backing color includes enough for strips)
  • Clear acetate (2 x 2-3/4”)
  • Cardstock scrap
  • JustRite stamps and ink pad
  • Sewing needle and matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • *OPTIONAL fabric paint

  1. Paint canvas with fabric paint before beginning so canvas doesn’t show through.
  2. Cut fabric for back of tag and set aside.
  3. Recommend tearing fabric into strips to guarantee a straight strip. Snip fabric about 1/4" from cut edge, along salvage edge, and tear. You may need to do this a few times until you have torn a piece that goes the whole 45 width of the fabric. Now you can make a few snips 1” apart and tear your 1” strips. You will need a couple strips of each color to start.
  4. Bind the canvas (HLL pp 20-21) and work using the spiral method of locker hooking (pg 24).
  5. Begin your pattern following sample on pg 46 and adjust for the # of colors you have chosen. I made a graph paper with the specic # of squares and drew my pattern following the sample in the book. Very easy. Set aside when completed and tails are woven into canvas (pp 30-31).

To Make Loop

  1. Select 3 colors and tear a 1” strip. (ea. about 30” long)
  2. Line up the 3 colors in a stack and tie in a lose knot about 2” from the end of the strip.
  3. Place knot between your knees and braid until you have a braided strip about 13” long.
  4. Untie knot and bring “tails” side-by-side (trim excess beyond 2” on each tail) and stitch onto back of tag just below the nished canvas edge. Stitch tails as at as possible.

To Finish Back Of Tag

  1. Center acetate on fabric panel (tape in place) and stitch 1/4"from edge of acetate on 3 sides.
  2. Cut cardstock 1 1/2"x2 1/2" (check for a good t) and use JustRite stamps to complete.
  3. Fold under 1/2” on each side of fabric, adjust to t back of tag and press.
  4. Whipstitch fabric panel to back of tag (pp 32).
